Learning and development

An engaged and motivated team is fundamental to achieving our vision and helping employees reach their full potential forms a key way in which we do this.

We offer all employees a range of training opportunities to allow them to continually develop. By committing to learning and training opportunities, we want our colleagues to feel confident and motivated to contribute to our success.

Training programmes

Training starts with a detailed on-line induction programme for all new employees to help you get up to speed with our business. This is supplemented by site-specific procedures as appropriate. Every member of our team has an annual performance review, at which personal development plans are created identifying learning requirements to support job role or career development.

Management schemes

Development of our existing and future managers is critical if we are to maintain our competitive advantage. Role modelling and relationship building are two key factors that drive good people management and our management training programmes are built around these qualities and reflect our leadership principles and management responsibility policy.

Among the schemes on offer is a novice and practised manager programme, which provides training based on real business issues and encourages managers to look at behaviours rather than a task-oriented approach.

More experienced managers are likely to have specific development needs and a portfolio of modules and workshops are available to meet skills and knowledge gaps identified within our performance review process.

Talent management

Employees identified with high potential are offered general and individual development training, supported by both their line manager and mentor coaching.

Sponsored developmental training

We encourage our team to achieve additional recognised qualifications – from National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) or Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ) to degree courses and MBAs. In most cases we will fund your studies but you will be expected to study in your own time.

Pay for professional memberships

We recognise that the world is a dynamic place and that keeping up with developments and new ways of working ensures that employees with professional qualifications stay at the top of their game.  We support membership of appropriate professional organisations and cover the costs associated with involvement.

The learning and personal growth benefits such organisations offer help our team to remain motivated and professional engaged and Heidelberg Materials staff belong to a wide range of such groups including; Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, Chartered Association of Building Engineers, Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and International Institute of Risk & Safety Management, among others.
