Our Human Resources (HR) department is responsible for the company’s most important asset – its people.

The team of 14, led by HR director Clare Mayo, supports the rest of the business on all employee-related issues including; compensation, benefits, recruitment, training and development, as well as compliance with employment regulations.

Based across four locations – Maidenhead, Dagenham, Chipping Sodbury in South Gloucestershire and Syston in Leicestershire, the team’s approach is to ensure the company has the right people, in the right place, at the right time.

Succession planning and training and development is key to shaping the company’s future talent and HR has been instrumental in driving Heidelberg Materials’s strategy in this area. It is rightly proud in the success of its talent programmes for Heidelberg Materials managers as well as its graduate and apprenticeship schemes. The Higher apprenticeship programme, launched in 2011, has now been adopted industry-wide. It combines practical experience with a fully-funded distance-learning Foundation Degree in Minerals Extractive Technology from the University of Derby and 50+ apprentices have been through the programme so far.

The qualifications needed to work in HR depend on the role, with the minimum requirements being five GCSEs Grade C / 4+ and above for junior positions. There is scope for career progression, with previous members of the HR team recruited into a graduate role and moving up into a management position.  One of our HR Business Partners developed her career by moving into product sales within the business.
