Meeting different people, with different backgrounds, from both inside and outside of the business has helped provide unit manager Jenna Roberts with perspective for her role.

After completing a master’s degree in mining engineering, Jenna joined the company in 2018 as assistant unit manager at Hanson’s Shap quarry in Cumbria, a large limestone quarry which incorporates a rail facility and sand and gravel operation.

Her role focused on the day-to-day running of the excavation, production process and rail sidings, while working alongside departments such as commercial, technical and asphalt.

“I really enjoyed working with the team and absorbed as much information as I could from the experienced supervisors and foreman who had worked at the site for a long time,” said Jenna. “I also enjoyed getting stuck into maintenance activities, as well as scheduling and planning trains with our rail freight provider.”

Jenna moved from Shap in 2020 and moved south to become a unit manager at Tytherington quarry in South Gloucestershire, which is a key supplier to major infrastructure projects as well as the local market.

“There is significant investment in the site, making it an exciting place to develop and continuously improve,” Jenna added.

“I enjoy the variety my role offers, which covers a huge spectrum of activities and responsibilities, so no two days are ever the same: some can be office based and others can be building dewatering pipelines. I am constantly learning, growing and overcoming challenges.

“The people I work with are also a big part of why I enjoy my job. We have built a small family on site and work as a team as safely and as efficiently as we can – while having some laughs along the way.”
