Keelan McNulty - Engineer in training

I joined the graduate scheme in 2018 after a degree in Mining and Geology as it provided an opportunity to get well-rounded experience in management, in several different areas of the business. I’m now an Engineer-in-Training for Heidelberg Cement in their Competency Centre Materials (CCM) arm where I have the opportunity to see sites all over the UK, helping manage several projects and even running my own.

The variety of the graduate scheme is great, allowing you to learn from colleagues in operations, sales, finance, service centres, geology, surveying, technical, health and safety, rail and logistics and project management.

I have particularly loved the mentor and buddy aspect of the programme. You are paired with a graduate in the year above, and a mentor who has a lot of experience in the business. This level of support ensures you always have someone to approach to help you out, especially at the start when you are finding your feet. Later on, they can help you network with others in the business where needed.

I’ve made great friends in the graduate scheme and really enjoyed my time in it. I recommend it to anyone with ambition and drive – the more you can put in the more you’ll get out.
